Fact 1: The Spirit of the Klabautermann
The Going Merry is one of the very few ships in the history of One Piece to manifest a “Klabautermann”—the spirit of a ship. This phenomenon only occurs when a vessel is deeply loved and cared for by its crew.
Merry’s Klabautermann once appeared to repair the ship on Skypiea and made its final appearance at Water 7 to express its gratitude to the Straw Hat Pirates.

Fact 2: Originally Not Designed for Combat
In fact, the Going Merry was designed as a luxury vessel for Miss Kaya rather than a pirate warship. As a result, the ship features very comfortable interiors—Nami and Nico Robin even had a room equipped with a bar and a bathtub. However, it lacked the durability to withstand heavy impacts, which is why it deteriorated quickly after entering the Grand Line.

Fact 3: The “Farewell” That Brought the Most Tears in One Piece
The funeral of the Going Merry is widely considered one of the saddest moments in anime and manga history. During that moment, Merry spoke its final words (through the voice of the Klabautermann):
